Review of IDENTITY CRISIS by Jean Hackensmith

Title: Identity Crisis

Genre: Detective
Author: Jean Hackensmith
Publisher: Inkwater Press
Language: English
Pages: 260

When rumors of how Dan Hamilton actually died reach the Cheyenne Chief of Police, Brian Koski is forced to resign his position as captain of the Sixth Precinct and go into business for himself as a private detective. His partner? A mahogany colored Belgian Malinois named Sinbad. A former NYPD police dog, Sinbad is vicious when need be and reliable to a fault–unless a train goes by or there’s a thunderstorm, then chances are he will turn tail and run.
Brian’s first clients are Jeff and Melody Patten. He’s an explosives expert for a local demolitions company, she’s a stay-at-home Mom. Both are devoted parents to their young daughter, Angela. The problem comes in the form of one Collin Lanaski, an unstable ex-Air Force lieutenant and Angela’s second grade teacher, who suddenly starts insisting that Angela is his daughter—the same daughter who died in a tragic car accident four years earlier.  What does Collin base this incredible revelation on?  Dog tags and car seats.  Brian is convinced the man has suffered a psychotic break.  He’s delusional and dangerous, and it becomes the P.I.’s job to protect Angela from a madman.

Review

Identity Crisis is book two in the B.K. Investigations series; however, it is not necessary to read the first book in order to read this one.  This book starts with Police Captain Brian Koski losing his job due to some issues the disliked Chief has with him.  While he hates losing his job, he starts a new career as a P.I. and hopes to make the best out of the situation.
One if his first clients are the parents of Angela, a 7 year old whose teacher thinks she is his daughter.  The teacher, Collin Lanaski, insists that his daughter did not die in a car crash and his vowed to do anything he has to in order to get his daughter (Angela/Courtney) back.  That includes kidnapping her.
This book is has one of the aspects of a parent’s worst nightmare, your child being kidnapped.  It was easy to get wrapped up in this and keep scanning the pages to see what is going to happen next.  You couldn’t help but be sucked into this nightmare and keep reading to see what happens.  I had no choice to keep reading, even after I should have called it quits for the night in order to find out what happens.
If you love a good mystery/suspense book, this one is for you.  It will suck you and keep you turning the pages to see what is going to happen next.  Since I have not read anything by this author before, I was looking forward to reading something different and this book did not disappoint.  Don’t take my word for it, make sure to get your copy today!

ABOUT JEAN HACKENSMITH

I have been writing since the age of twenty.  (That’s 37 years and, yes, I’m disclosing my age.)  I am the proud mother of three, stepmother of two, and grandmother to twelve wonderful children.  I lost the love of my life, my husband Ron, in November of 2011 when he died in an accident at work.  He took my heart with him and, for a time, my desire to write.  Time, as they say, heals all wounds, and I have again discovered my passion for the written word.  In fact, I find it strangely comforting to delve into the intricate webs that are my character’s lives and immerse myself in their existence instead of dwelling on my own.

Next to writing, my second passion is live theater.  I founded a local community theater group back in 1992 and directed upwards of 40 shows, including three that I authored.  I also appeared on stage a few times, portraying Anna in The King and I and Miss Hannigan in Annie.  I am sad to say that the theater group closed its final curtain in 2008, but those 16 years will always hold some of my fondest memories.

My husband and I moved from Superior five years ago, seeking the serenity of country living.  We also wanted to get away from the natural air conditioning provided by Lake Superior.  We moved only 50 miles south, but the temperature can vary by 20-30 degrees.  I guess I’m a country girl at heart.  I simply love this area, even though I must now enjoy its beauty alone.  I love the solitude, the picturesque beauty of the sun rising over the water, the strangely calming effect of watching a deer graze outside your kitchen window.  Never again, will I live in the city.  I am an author, after all, and what better place to be inspired than in God’s own back yard.

BOOK TRAILER:

Review & Giveaway ~ UNCONDITIONAL LOVE by Kelly Elliott

SYNOPSIS:

Lark Williams leads a fast-paced life, always on the edge of danger. Running from his past and fighting to keep his present life a secret, he keeps his heart out of reach from love. The walls he built around himself come crumbling down when he meets Azurdee Emerson.

Azurdee lives a peaceful life in the small town of Wimberley, Texas. Her tame world quickly becomes heated as she begins to fall in love with Lark. He’s everything she has vowed to stay away from—dark and mysterious, and not to mention, sexy as hell and full of secrets.

Just as Lark and Azurdee give in to their feelings of love, Lark’s present life threatens the safety of the one person he would sacrifice his own happiness for. When Lark finds history repeating itself, he makes a decision that will forever change both of their lives, leaving one heartbroken and lost and the other fighting to survive.

Review

I feel like I have waited for this book for forever, but really it has not been that long.  When we first seen Lark and Azurdee together, you knew they would be explosive.  What I wasn’t prepared for was just how explosive!  Let’s just say that at times I don’t think a fire hose would have put out their flames.
We knew from previous book that Lark was closed off and had no desire to be tied down by anyone.  What we didn’t know was why.  When you find out in this book, you can’t help but feel sympathetic for him.  He suffered a great loss and has guarded his heart ever since.  However, when he meets Azurdee, he knows that his walls won’t last long.
Azurdee has cared about Lark from the first moment they met.  She knows that he has a mysterious past and his lifestyle is wild, but she can’t help but want him.  She craves him and knows that no one else will do.  When they finally come together, he makes her feel so special and she finally believes she may get her HEA.
However, not everything is smooth sailing.  Despite how they feel for each other, they both know their lives are complicated and any relationship will be hard.  When their love is tested, will they be able to stay together?  Will they be able to overcome their past and the secrets that are hidden?
I have read and love all of Kelly Elliott’s books and I couldn’t wait to read this one as well.  I knew it was going to be somewhat different due to the nature of Lark’s job, but I couldn’t wait.  This book sucks you in right from the beginning and you can’t help but fall in love with Lark and Azurdee.  They are truly perfect for each other, Lark with all his hardness, mysterious job and guarded heart and Azurdee with her sweet, all-consuming love for Lark.
I truly enjoyed this book and I know you will as well.  Kelly did a great job and I can’t wait to read the next book in The Journey to Love Series, Undeniable Love, about Lark’s older brother Tristan.  What are you waiting for?  Make sure to 1-Click your copy today!!

Hello? Jessie?”

“What did you just ask me?” she said.

I chuckled. “After your first time. Were you sore?”

Then she screamed. Right in my ear. “Azurdee! You and Lark? Oh. My. God. Was it good? I mean, I know it hurts at first, but after that? How many times did y’all? Was he sweet to you? That bastard better have been sweet to you! Was it hot? Oh my God, tell me everything!”

I laughed as I made my way downstairs. I saw about a half dozen people out back cleaning up the rest of the reception. Tables and chairs were being taken down and placed into a trailer.

“Azurdee!”

“Oh, sorry. I was watching them take down the rest of the things from the reception.”
She let out a long sigh and said, “Azurdee, spill it.”

I moved into the living room and sat down on the sofa. “Oh Jessie, it was amazing. He was amazing. He kept calling me mi amor! It melted my heart every time he said it. He was sweet, passionate, and so gentle. It was beyond anything I had ever dreamed.”
She let out the silliest little yelp. “I knew Lark Williams had it in him.

He just needed to find the right girl.”

My stomach dipped a little and my smile faded a bit. “Well, I’m not sure if I’m the right girl or even the girl.”

“Wait. Was this a one-time thing? Please tell me you didn’t agree to him taking your virginity and walking away!”

“No. We both agreed that we would be exclusive, but I have a feeling this is the first time he has been exclusive since…well since…” Why couldn’t I say her name?

“Nikki?” Jessie asked.

“Yes. Jessie, why do I feel like I’m in competition with someone who passed away years ago? I can’t shake this feeling that he was comparing me to her.”

She let out a breath and said, “Pesh. Nonsense, Azurdee. He would never do that. I’m sure it was probably just very powerful for him. I mean, by his own admission he has said he has no intentions of ever…”

Her voice trailed off and I knew she was regretting what she had just said. “Jessie, I knew how Lark was and how he thought when I got into this. I know he could walk away at any given moment.”

I silently prayed that would never happen, but deep down inside I knew it was a strong possibility.

“He won’t walk away, sweetie. I see the way he looks at you. I think you are the game changer he’s been waiting for.”

I bit down on my fingernail and began chewing it. “Maybe. I don’t want to get my hopes up, ya know?”

“So tell me…are you sore?” she asked with a giggle.

I felt like a teenager in high school. “Let’s just say he told me he was going to make it so I would think about him every time I moved…for a few days.”
Jessie let out a gasp and began laughing. “Oh my.”

I dropped my head back onto the sofa and said, “Jessie…he is amazing. I mean…the way he can be so sweet and then so dirty. Oh God. He had me going insane with lust for him.”

“The sweet part surprises me, but not the dirty,” she said with a laugh. I laughed in return and said, “Four times.”

“Four times! Look at the stamina Mr. Williams has!”

We both lost it in a laughing fit. “Jesus, Azurdee. No wonder you’re sore.”

“Bed twice, bathtub once, and then the shower,” I said in an almost whisper.

Review & Giveaway ~ ALL I WANT IS YOU by Toni Blake

SYNOPSIS:

Toni Blake’s new heartfelt Coral Cove series brings Blake’s incredible talent of creating a story that’s filled with hope and love. ALL I WANT IS YOU starts off the series with the story of Christy Knight, a character who appeared in her Destiny series. Readers will remember Christy from her encounter with Anna Romo, the heroine of Hall Moon Hill (a 2014 RITA Award Finalist), the last installment in the Destiny series. Christy’s life changed when a horrible fire claimed the lives of her mother and father; she’s left to deal with the aftermath of financial troubles on her own. Christy grew up in the small, cozy town Destiny, Ohio, but she feels her future lies elsewhere. In hopes of figuring out what’s next, she’s decided to move to the city.

Christy and her roommate Bethany are struggling to make ends meet. The beautiful jewelry she creates doesn’t pay the bills. To top it off, Christy’s just found out about her Grandpa Charlie’s own financial troubles and that he may be asked to leave his assisted living home. As his only living relative left, Christy feels it’s up to her to help but she can barely help herself. Bethany thinks it’s time for Christy to grow up and find a guy who’s smart, sexy, and solvent. Though Christy’s hesitant about the plan—she’s a romantic at heart after all—faced with few options she’s willing to give it a shot.

The search spells disaster from day one. Her first date fails before it even starts! She did, however, meet her sexy neighbor Jack DuVall. He’s not quite the man she needs at the moment—if only his blue eyes weren’t so mesmerizing. It seems the rugged handyman fits the first two categories (smart and sexy), but he’s all wrong for her. As Jack helps Christy with small patch-up jobs around the apartment, they develop a friendship. Jack hasn’t been entirely forthcoming, he’s not really just a handyman and he’s nowhere near broke. Wary of trusting others because of a painful past he doesn’t want to revisit, he thinks it’s best to wait before sharing too much information about himself.

Meanwhile, Grandpa Charlie thinks it’s time for Christy to take a break from her day-to-day stresses and get some much needed R&R by visiting him in sunny Coral Cove.  Knowing she’s short on funds, Jack wants to help Christy make the trip happen, but how can he without exposing that he’s actually loaded? He joins her under the pretext of needing a vacation as well, splitting the expenses.  As the long hot days turn into sizzling nights together, Jack can’t deny his reasons for going along are far from noble.

The Coral Cove charm captivates Christy and Jack, and a passionate, loving relationship blossoms. Jack finds he had it all wrong—Christy’s not only gorgeous, but feisty and completely irresistible; after so much heartbreak and let downs Christy feels she finally has someone she can trust. But, when Jack shares secrets he’s been holding back, the relationship is compromised. As they both struggle to find their way back to each other, the quirky seaside town of Coral Cove could prove the perfect place to find a red-hot destiny of their own.

ALL I WANT IS YOU is a brilliant start to a heartwarming and sexy series, filled with Blake’s relatable blend of inspiring, passionate stories of hope and new beginnings. Readers will fall in love with the seaside town of Coral Cove and its quirky characters over and over again.

Review:

Oh were do I even begin?  This story holds such much emotion that it is hard to even know how to explain it.  We meet Christy right off the bat with her friends discussing her life and all the pain she has kept hidden from everyone.  Obviously her friends want to help, but Christy realizes that in order for her to move on, she has to do it by herself.  She ends up with a wonderful roommate living in a not so desirable area of Cincinnati.  Just when she thinks her life can't get any worse, she get horrible news from her Grandfather.
When her roommate comes up with the idea that she should find a rich man to marry to take care of all her troubles, she reluctantly goes along with it.  What she doesn't expect to find on the night of her first date is the very delicious and handsome neighbor Jack.  What she doesn't realize is that there is more to Jack than what meets the eyes.  When Jack finds out about her plan to marry a rich man, he can't believe Christy would do that.  This brings to the surface the hurt of his past and he wants nothing to do with her.
However, his heart is saying something else.  While he is trying to fight his feelings for Christy, he only ends up making his feelings stronger.  When her grandfather suggest a vacation to Florida to visit him, Jack knows he has to go with her.  Their trip soon becomes a journey for both of them to find themselves and let go of everything that has been holding them back.
This book is wonderfully written and keeps you reading to find out what is going to happen next.  You can't help but have a heavy heart for Christy and everything that has happened to her.  You want her to get her HEA and believe in herself.  And Jack, where do I even begin.  He is such a wonderful man who is scared to let his guard down.  He knows that he is falling in love with Christy, but is determined to not let that happen.  I love how he is always encouraging her to follow her dreams and is so proud of her when she succeeds.
I am looking forward to reading more in this series.  I loved how this book ended and I can't wait to see if the other characters get their HEA as well.  What are you waiting for?  Make sure to 1-click your copy today!

EXCERPT:

Christy stood before him frozen in horror.  Of so many kinds.  Frustration that bordered on agony.  Embarrassment that – oh God – he was really turning her down again.  And hurt.  There was no other way to describe that part of it – it simply hurt, so unbelievably much that she wondered how she would survive it.
As her lower lip began to tremble, she bit down on it, trying not to let him see.  Not that that was enough to help this situation even one iota.  She wanted desperately to rehook her bra, but she couldn't do it from this angle and could only hold it helplessly in place over her breasts.  She'd never felt so rejected in her life.
Trying to swallow back her pain, a spark of anger erupted from her.  "Why did you have to start kissing me?  Why did you even start this at all?"  She could no longer meet his gaze – what had become easy and effortless had now grown impossible again.  At some point her eyes had become stuck on his chest because, hot and masculine though it was, it still seemed a safer place to look.
"I'm so sorry, honey," he said.  "I ... didn't mean to exactly.  I didn't plan it.  It's just that you're ... really beautiful when you're passionate about something, that's all."
She pulled in her breath, both flattered and bewildered – and Anna's words came back to her.  About going for it.  About never knowing how things would have gone if you didn't.  So even now, even as reckless as it seemed, she didn't hold back.  "I'm passionate about you, Jack."
He let out a heavy breath.  And her heart beat so hard it hurt.
"I'm passionate about you, too, Christy,” he said.  “Believe me, I am.  I just ..."
"What?" she demanded.
Now it was he who looked away, dropping his gaze to the flowered print of her skirt.  "Maybe I'm just worried about … attachment.”
“Attachment?” she asked.
He spoke more directly this time.  “Maybe I'm worried that I'll get attached to you, or you'll get attached to me."
I'm already attached to you.  But this time she held the words in.  Since putting it on the line didn't seem to be working in this case.  Who'd have thought getting lucrative consignment deals for her jewelry would be so much easier than giving herself to a man – and getting him to take her.
Somehow Anna's simple story had made Christy believe that if she put her heart out there for him to see, she'd find out he loved her, too.  Anna had made it sound ... hard, and yet at the same time so very simple.  Like the happy ending would just come if you willed it to.  So where was her happy ending?  And why had she been so foolish to believe it could be that easy?
Instead of saying any of that, though – instead of forcing out any more honesty and openness – now she found herself trying to deal in logic.  "I thought you said we'd come to Florida and see what happened.  That we'd let things take their course, go with the flow.  You're stopping the flow."
He looked so pained for her now that she knew her own pain was written all over her face.  It didn't matter what she said – she'd already made herself as vulnerable as a person could be.  And the thing about vulnerability was – once it was out there, you couldn't take it back.  She couldn't take it back.  Anymore than she could rehook her bra.
"That seemed like a good idea at the time,” Jack said, eyes still fraught with distress.  “But I'm not sure it's that simple now.  I mean, it's like I said – I'm afraid ... one of us will get attached."
"Don't you think,” she began desperately albeit still logically, “that most sex attaches people?  In some way?  Even if they pretend it doesn't?"  Oh crap, what was she doing?  Spilling her heart out onto the floor some more, that was all.  And maybe saying things she didn't even really know she felt until this very moment.  "And the truth is – I wouldn't want to have sex with anyone I might not get attached to.  It's a connection.  It's supposed to mean something.  Even if the whole world has tried to make it into nothing more than a recreational activity."  She stopped, sighed, let her gaze drop – because she realized she'd met his eyes again in the course of spewing out all this stupid honesty.  And she felt all the more naked, but it had nothing to do with her state of undress.
When she next spoke, her voice went softer.  "Or that's how it feels to me anyway.  So if getting attached sounds so horrible to you, then I guess it's just as well you stopped."

Review

When a new author releases their first book, you are not sure what to expect.  I don't have any pre-conceived ideas of what to expect or how I think the book is going to go.  And that is exactly what happened with this one.  What I can tell  you is that J.D. Hollyfield did a wonderful job with her first book.
This book is written well and you can't help but put yourself into Sarah's shoes, especially the gold Manolo Blahniks.  When Sarah finds herself back at home at the ripe age of 31, she doesn't know how to get over the betrayal that has happened to her.  She also doesn't know how to put on her big girl panties and get on with her life.  She is so depressed over the current state of her life that she is not sure how to move on.  When she runs into Jack, literally, she can't help but be taken back by him.  Even if he is a little on the angry side.
When Jack and Sarah realize that he is going to be doing the construction on her parents house, they don't know whether to be angry or start ripping each others clothes off.  You can almost here the air around them sizzling anytime they are around each other.  When they finally do give in to their mutual attraction, I think you will agree with me that there needs to be a fire hose ready.
More than anything though, I love how Jack brings Sarah back to life.  He helps her to realize her life is not over and she is so much better than her past.  Jack is truly a wonderful character that you can't help but fall in love with.  He is so strong and steadfast in his quest to help Sarah get back her life that you HAVE to love him!
I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed this book.  I love Sarah and Jack.  Both of their characters are perfect.  I love the humor, the witty banter and I loved watching Sarah blossom into a better person.  This is a wonderful book by a new author and I am looking forward to see what else she writes in the future.  Don't just take my word for it, make sure to get your copy today!

Excerpt

“No, that's not what I meant,” he says. “Look at me.” He holds my wrist firmly in his grip, waiting for me to stop fighting his hold and make eye contact with him. This just isn't happening to me. “Sarah, look at me,” he says again, and at the sound of my name leaving his lips I turn and look. I see scorching gold eyes burning right into mine. Intense emotions drain out of his eyes and pour into mine. “I didn't kiss you because I felt sorry for you. I kissed you because I haven't stopped thinking about kissing you since I first saw you on the street. Then the second chance I got after you walked into my office all bent out of hell to drive me insane. I haven’t slept a good fuckin’ night since I slammed my mouth on yours two weeks ago. What I'm sorry about is that I took advantage of you in a vulnerable moment. It was wrong of me."

“Azurdee? Honey, we have a slight problem and need you right away!”

Ari yelled from the front porch.

I gave Paul a weak smile and said, “I have to run but maybe I’ll talk to you soon.” I quickly turned and headed toward Ari, who was standing there giving me a shit-eating grin.

Ari was one of Jessie’s closest friends here in Mason, along with Ellie, Heather, and Amanda. They were all friends but acted more like sisters. I stopped right in front of her and asked, “How did you know I needed rescuing?”

She gave me a Cheshire cat grin and said, “Please, bitch, I saw the way you and Lark were dancing earlier. Too bad your date didn’t notice the hotness between the two of you on the dance floor. I knew you were trying to ditch the date and I was pretty sure when I saw him roll down that window he was asking if you would like to meet for coffee sometime?”

I chuckled and said, “It was dinner.”

Ari rolled her eyes and said, “Stupid bastard must have been the only one to not see you and Lark practically humping on the dance floor.”

“Oh my God, Ari! It wasn’t that bad…was it?”

She gave me an evil smile and said, “Let’s just say I’m wishing I would have started a bet among the girls because I have a feeling someone is going to be coming over to the…” Ari looked around and then looked back at me and whispered, “My-cherry-was-popped side.”

My mouth dropped open and I stood there frozen. “I just don’t even know what to say to that, Ari.”

“I get that a lot. Okay, just make sure the bastard gives you an orgasm before he sticks his…”

I held up my hands and said, “Please stop! Really, I think I’m going to be okay without your…tips.”

Ari laughed and said, “Okay, seriously though, it does help you relax.

Are you on the pill? Please tell me you are at least on the pill.”

My heart started pounding and my hands started sweating. “Um…yeah, since college. Just to be safe. I dated a guy in college for a while and thought he might be the one but turns out he was far from the one.”

Ari’s mouth dropped open. “You haven’t had a boyfriend since college?

My God Azurdee, do you just not like men?”

I laughed and pushed her back some. “Yes, bitch, I like men. I just haven’t met a guy who did it for me. One that made me want to give myself
completely to him until…”

Ari wiggled her eyebrows up and down and said, “Mysterious and
handsome Lark Williams has though, hasn’t he?”

I let out a sigh and walked over to the porch swing and sat down.

“Oh my God, Ari. I don’t know what it is, but when I’m around him my body just goes into overdrive and I have to do everything in my power to keep from jumping him. It’s been like this from the beginning. I’ve dreamt about him, I’ve thought about him while driving, working, out onother dates. I cannot get him out of my head. He is my weakness.”

Ari sat down and gave me a weak smile. “Is it just a sexual thing? I mean…do you have other feelings for him?”

I nodded my head. “No, it’s not just sexual. I mean, a big part of it is of course, and the fact that I pretty much threw myself at him tonight has my stomach dropping. But there’s more to it. When he enters a room, I swear I have to take a deep breath. He brushes by me or touches me in the slightest way and my stomach flips around like I’m on a damn thrill ride. His eyes…oh my God. I get totally lost in them. I swear—if he had told me to strip down and let him make love to me on the dance floor, I would have done it.”
